McKinney XC - Snowshoe Trails

McKinney Nordic Ski Club

McKinney Nordic Ski Club is a small, volunteer-run xc-ski and snowshoe trail network, located 27 km east of Oliver, along the Camp McKinney Rd.  The area hosts 14 km of xc-ski trails, varying in difficulty from novice to advanced, along with a pair of snowshoe trails which run straight through the heart of the area as a whole.

The xc-ski trails are groomed and track-set regularly by a volunteer groomer operator with a Bombardier Snow Cat.  There are several open shelters in place along the trails, along with outhouses, but no fully enclosed day-lodge.  Canine companions are not allowed on the ski trails, but are on snowshoe routes.

This small, but very well-marked and mapped trail network is family-friendly and approachable by able-bodied individuals, and can be completely circumnavigated in perhaps two hours.  Trail maps are posted at all junctions.

Rates are available for annual memberships, and drop-ins are welcome, with an 'appreciation by donation' mantra.

Annual Membership Rates:

$50 per couple, $30 Single, $60 Family.

History

The ski club was formed in 1990, although at that point it was called the Inkameep X Country Ski Club, with the trails located at Km 21 on the McKinney Rd.  In 1995 the trails were moved to Km 27, as the snow conditions were improved at the higher elevation, and the name of the trail network was changed to McKinney Nordic Ski Club.  Most of the trails make use of old unused logging roads, with the exception of the snowshoe trails, which wind through stands of cedar, fir, pine and poplar.

Special events

School Ski Program: in the month of February the ski club offers an introduction to cross-country skiing for local elementary school kids.  This takes place some weekdays in February.  The trails are still open to the club members and the public, they are just a little bit busier than usual.
